1. New Job
- Select the material type.
- Click “Save”. This creates a new CAM job.
2. Import the .STL files
- Navigate to the .stl files you want to bring in and select them.
- Select the correct object type. The object type selected should match the restoration type you are bringing in.
- Iff you are bringing in a full contour crown, select anatomic crown. If you are bringing in a screw retained crown, select abutment. You can mix any restoration types in the same job except for abutments. Any hybrid abutments, screw retained crowns, or screw retained bridges do not share the same strategy as the other.
- Click Open.
- To rotate the .stl file after bringing it into Sum3D, hold down Ctrl and left click and drag. To pan, hold down Shift and left click and drag.
3. Select Machining Strategy
- Sum3D should bring you into the correct folder depending on the object types you selected when importing. Select the one that ends with the burr types you are using in your mill.
- Click Open.
- Select the milling options for this job.
Choose one of the standards (Anatomical or Substructure). The anatomical means there is anatomy and the 0.3 mm tool will be used. The substructure means the 0.3 mm tool will not be used. If you are mixing substructures and full contours together, you will want to select Standard Anatomical.
Now decide if you want the mill to trim the connectors. Each color of the sprues means a certain task. The red sprues mean the sprue will be slightly reduced in milling. The green sprues mean they will be completely removed during milling. With this check box selected, the job will follow that. If the box is unchecked, no matter what color the sprues are they will not be cut or reduced.
4. Bring in the puck or stock
- When you click this it will bring you to this window below. The list you see is a list of pucks you have put in previously. If your list is blank, that means you do not have any pucks entered in yet.
- If you need to create a puck, click the Create button, and enter in the following information.
- The Lot Code is an optional field that keeps track of the lot codes of the pucks you are purchasing.
It is extremely important to fill in the information accurately. Entering in the wrong height can cause a crash in the mill. The result in a wrong shrinkage rate will be that the units will come out either way too big or way too small.
It is also important to be sure to create a name for the puck in the Stock/Blank Name. If a name is not added this may cause the puck to not save in your used puck list.
4. Click Ok.

5. Click Yes
This question is basically saying that the unit is at an angle, and whether you would like to turn the unit more vertical to conserve zirconia space.
The reason the units are at an angle is because Sum3D tries to put the unit in the smallest puck size possible, so it tilts the unit.
Putting the unit in a bigger size than what it asked for triggers this question, and you always want to hit yes.
5. Calculate Job
- Clicking this will start the job calculation. You need to do this so you can send the units to the machine to mill.
- This window will pop up and that name is just the job name being sent to the mill. You can change the name if you'd like too. This name is the one you will find in your V Panel.
The “Open file after calculation with ‘Notepad’” check box means that when the calculation is finished, Notepad will open up and show you the information that is being sent to the mill.
6. Move Objects
- With this button you can move the units manually in the puck. When you start the command, left click on the unit you wish to move, which will turn the unit white. Right click to confirm that this is the unit you wish to move.
- Left click and drag the unit around where you want it. You can rotate the unit using the + and - keys on the number pad on the keyboard. You can also bring the unit up and down in the disk using the Pg Up and Pd Dn keys.
- Once you have the unit exactly where you want it, right click and a window asking you to confirm that is where you want the unit this will pop up.
- Click Yes.
- After confirming the move Sum3D will stay in the command so you can move more units without going back into the command every time. If you are all done moving units, right click once more and the new holes will be created in the spots where you have moved the unit(s).
7. Add Support Pins
- Clicking this will bring you to this window:
- The measurements shown are the default sizes. You never want to make those smaller and we haven't found a reason to make them bigger. Click Ok.
- Now in the command, left click on the spot where you want a sprue to be added. You can continue to rotate around while in the command as long as you continue to hold down Ctrl.
- When you are finished adding sprues, right click.
8. Remove Items
- Clicking this will allow you to delete sprues and units. When in the command, you can left click on everything you wish to delete whether it’s a sprue or a unit. This will turn the part white.
- Once you have everything selected that you wish to be deleted, right click and you will be asked to confirm.
- Clicking this will start the calculation simulation.
